A Fortnight Trail in Himachal


Think of a distant land where you can wander about in the Valley of the God, breathing in fresh air from the adjoining peaks of The Himalayas. A land of ancient high grounds so rich in history, it will take you back to a time ride. With drastic diversities in terrain along the stretch, one can experience the different philosophy of living infused among the various tribes of the land; all coexisting seamlessly. From the valleys of Kinnaur to the cold deserts of the Spiti Valley, every place tells a story. Once get familiar with the locals and these stories become more intriguing and insightful.

Himachal Pradesh welcomes to have an experience through the diverse topography of the state and in the process help getting a sneak peek into the philosophy of the mountains. Let’s get ready to be lost in a mystical land and when we find our way back as expected to have become a little bit wiser.

Itinerary

Day 1

We will pick you up from the Chandigarh Airport/ Railway station and drive you to your hotel in Shimla. You have the rest of the day completely to yourself. Roam around at your will. Dinner will be ready for you at the hotel and night stay at Shimla.

Day 2

We will be visiting Kufri and its adjoining places today. Having an early breakfast, we will reach Kufri shortly as it is a mere 13 KM away from Shimla. The day will be spent in visiting The Chini Bungalow, Green Valley and other places of interest. We will be back to Shimla by evening where you can spend some time in The Mall. You may try some local cuisine for dinner or may have it in the hotel and night stay at Shimla.

Day 3

Today, after breakfast, we leave for a wonderful journey to Sarahan, aptly known as the Gateway to Kinnaur. The most talked about place of interest here is the Bhimakali temple which will amaze you with its architectural brilliance. In case you are a bird lover, you will be intrigued to find birds like Jujurana and Monal, the latter being the state bird. After returning to Sarahan, you can spend the rest of the day mingling with the local inhabitants. Dinner will be served in the hotel followed by night stay at Sarahan.

Day 4

We plan on visiting the picturesque village of Chitkul today, at a height of 9000 ft. Bask in the natural charisma of this place as we roam about through the village; getting familiar with the local inhabitants and their culture. Whenever we feel tired, we will return to our hotel to rest. Dinner will be ready on time and we will spend the night in Chitkul.

Day 5

After an early morning breakfast, we start for the Sangla Valley. Keeping our luggage in the pre-booked tent at Sangla Valley, we will start our journey to the Kamru Fort, with a legendary brass door decorated with inscriptions of Buddha. Once we return to the camp, the rest of the day can be well spent on getting acquainted with the local people and their tribal cultures. We will embrace the silence of the place in the midst of a lovely dinner in late evening and night stay at Sangla.

Day 6

Today we will explore the Sangla valley. A hefty breakfast will be needed for this whole day trip to places like the Bering Nag Temple, Batseri village, Baspa Dam reservoir among others. After a tiring day with lots of in experiences, our returning to the Sangla camp (if available for the last night stay) and the bonding in between hot food for dinner and night stay at Sangla will be all in need for us.

Day 7

We leave for Kalpa today after breakfast. This village with a wonderful view of the Raldang, the Jorkanden and the Kinnaur Kailash peaks in the backdrop, is a treat for nature lovers. A casual stroll through the village shall give us the opportunity to get an idea of the local culture. The evening will be kept for leisure within a combination of dinner comfort sleep for the night stay at Kalpa.

Day 8

We travel to the Nako village today that got its name from the mystical serene lake in the village. Breakfast should be light before the onset of the travel because we will be traveling to a more dry and high terrain. Once there, bask in the beauty of The Spiti valley. The hard-working, yet simple inhabitants of the place can teach you a thing or two about life. Camps will be set in Spiti Valley where we will get mesmerized by the starry skies over dinner and night stay at Spiti.

Day 9

After an early breakfast, we start our journey to visit the 1000 years old Tabo Monastery, an ancient engineering and artistic marvel. Carved out of stones, and generously decorated with mud statues and unique wall paintings, it is aptly called The Ajanta of the Himalayas. Learn from the local inhabitants, their uniquely simple way of life and get inspired. The guest house of the monastery will be your crashing site tonight for the night stay at Tabo.

Day 10

The village of Kibber is our destination today. Known for snow leopard sightings in the distance, this place can be of great importance to wildlife photographers. However, the wildlife sanctuary is more accessible to most and is a must visit place. An amazing view of the barren cold desert on which the village is built will be a sight to click. In the evening, we will engage in an early dinner followed by night stay at Kibber.

Day 11

This day will be at our disposal as we can spend it for free. We may visit the Ki Monastery after breakfast and then encounter the terrain and its culture by walking around the village and hearing stories from the locals. The last night at the cold desert over local cuisine and night stay at Kibber will be remembered for sure.

Day 12

We will have an early breakfast and leave for Manali via the Kunzum Pass and The Rohtang Pass. Lunch will be en route. By evening we will reach Manali. The city walk and dinner on local street food will get us a glance of Manali’s magic. For obvious reasons, we will get back to the hotel for the night stay at Manali.

Day 13

This last day is reserved for the local sightseeing around Manali where we will visit Hadimba temple, Great Himalayan National Park, Mata temple among others. We may also indulge in some adventure sports like paragliding, rafting or skiing. Our tired souls will find rest once we return to the hotel for dinner and night stay at Manali.

Day 14

We leave early in the morning for either Chandigarh Railway Station or the airport to carry on our respective homebound journeys with the heavenly sites of Himachal in frames and minds.
