Tea and Heritage of Assam

A land carpeted by the unending stretches of velvet green shades of the tea plantations in gardens, most of them being centuries old, creates an enchanting aura around the state of Assam in India by complementing the rich old heritage of the state, previously being rules by the wise native rulers. Being a state well efficient in preserving the cultural roots of several tribes as well as the aristocratic grandeur of a couple of centuries old Gymkhana Club, Assam welcomes one to take a plunge into a land where time has been tamed.

At the contemporary times of rapid changes, a hiking that involve 8 days through the lands of tea like Mancotta, Dikom and Jamiral Tea Estates on one side and Jorhat, Kaziranga and Natidenga Karbi village on the other not only showcase the picturesque aspects of Assamese landscape, however, evoke a sense of respect for the deep-rooted cultural, significantly responsible in maintaining a rich heritage surrounding the land.

Assam urges all to indulge in experiencing the tales of the yesteryears while traveling through the state, perfectly adorned by the huge stretches of lush green tea gardens, each one rich in its own heritage value.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Amidst the Greens

The journey starts with our arrival at Dibrugarh, an industrial city covered by sprawling tea estates. Our chauffeur will drive us to the pre-booked accommodation, where a delicious lunch will ease out our tiredness. The afternoon shall be spent on visiting the locale, predominantly carpeted by the lush green tea gardens. Whereas, the calm evenings will be at leisure followed by dinner and night stay at Mancotta.

Day 2 - Leisure

The mesmerizingly beautiful mornings turn out enjoyable with a perfect combination of sumptuous breakfast, followed by an excursion to the Mancotta Tea Garden, to witness the processing involved in the production of tea. Lunch will be ready, and we will be back at the bungalow and spend some more time in balmy rest. Afterwards, we shall enjoy a joyride at the Brahmaputra to experience an enchanting sunset keeping river in the composition. When the light will start fading out, we will return to the bungalow for some leisure then dinner and, night stay at Mancotta.

Day 3 - Organic Greenery

After breakfast, we will visit Jokai Botanical Garden, conjured out of the Jokai Rain Forest; a small broadleaf forest spread about 12 KM away from Dibrugarh. We will return to the bungalow for lunch and after some time shall proceed towards Dikom and Jamiral tea estates to witness the concept of planting organic tea. With no more plans to extend, we will return to the bungalow for some additional relaxation followed by dinner and night stay at Mancotta.

Day 4 - Heritage Highs

After enjoying the last breakfast at the bungalow, we’ll be moving on to Jorhat, the Gateway to Upper Assam. It was the capital of the Ahom Kingdom. Enroute, we’ll be visiting the historic city of Sivasagar, surrounded by the Dehing Rainforest. The city is well-known for the ruins of the Ahom Palaces and monuments. As we stand in front of the century’s old structures of Rang Ghar, Shiva Dole, Kareng Ghar, and others, time seems to take a reverse flow. After having lunch en-route, we’ll be finally arriving at Jorhat and check into our pre-booked accommodation. The rest of the day will be at leisure followed by dinner and night stay at Jorhat.

Day 5 - Club Culture

After completing a delicious breakfast sitting amidst the lush green territories, we’ll be out for visiting the Jorhat Gymkhana Club, built in 1876. Apart from hosting the oldest Golf Course in Asia, the club has also provisions for horse racing, lawn tennis, swimming billiards, polo, and cricket. One can briefly indulge in a game or two of Golf before visiting the Tocklai Tea research Centre to get an idea of research involved in making the beverage. Afterwards, we’ll be returning back to Jorhat for the day. The evenings can be spent in leisure followed by dinner and night stay at Jorhat.

Day 6 - Kaziranga, the Wild Heritage

Today’s destination is the famous Kaziranga National Park and it will take at around 3 hours to reach the resort near Kaziranga where we will have our lunch and engage in some local visits. In the evening, we will be at leisure and can experience any cultural program of the local groups followed by dinner and night stay at Kaziranga.

Day 7 - The Expedition through Safari and Village Trip

An early morning elephant safari is on the cards to explore the forest from the closest quarters. We’ll be returning back to the resort soon, for breakfast, and set on for Natudenga Karbi village, adjoining to the Park, to experience the lifestyle of the natives. We shall definitely try for an authentic village lunch and set off for a jeep safari through the western part of the Park to catch a sight of the legendary Indian One-horned Rhinoceros, the prized possession of the Park. Later in the evening, we will return to the resort for leisure followed by dinner and night stay at Kaziranga.

Day 8 - The Departure

After an early breakfast, our chauffeur will drive us back to Guwahati Airport/ Rail Station for our homebound journey.
